Teachers, gift yourself a HAPPY BACK and SMILING FEET.
Very often we suggest that when at work make sure you don't sit for long hours. Instead stand up, walk about and so on so as to prevent the risks of musculoskeletal disorders or pains, aches, tendon injuries, muscular cramps etc. However for teachers who are walking about from one classroom to another and standing up for long hours during lectures, it is important to sit down and relax.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO ENSURE A HAPPY BACK AND SMILING FEET ?
- While working with younger group of children (2 - 6 years ) avoid sitting on kid's furniture if required to bend. Do not bend over to the child's height either. Instead lower the height of your chair or take a stool of lesser height. You can even use the chair's chest support to keep the back aligned.
- Avoid ferrying pile of books from one classroom to another, it will only burden your lower back, strain your shoulders, weaken your abdominal muscles and impose inappropriate and disbalanced stress on the hips, knees and feet.
- When writing on the board stand on both feet and at 1 feet distance from the board. So that elbow is at 90 degrees.
- Avoid standing on toes.
- Avoid bags that needs to be carried on a single shoulder, instead use a proper bag pack. It ain't fashionable but yes your body will thank you for this in the long run.
- Take sitting breaks in between the lectures. I mean sitting on the chair well supported.
- Avoid lean sitting on the table as it tends to put undue strain on the feet as whole leading to complains of heal pain and small amounts of stresses on the pelvis, glutes and hamstrings which is a cause of back pain in many individuals.
- While working on the laptop ensure proper alignment of elbows - back - hip - knee - ankle at 90, degrees, arms close to the body, wrist in slight extension and floating parallel to the keyboard, Screen at the eye level.
- While sitting on chairs avoid pulling your feet behind or extending them in front. Feet should be flat on the floor.
- Always ensure a 1.5" soft but firm heels for your daily use foot wear. This will help in healthy distribution of weight along different joints.
- Make sure your footwear is not made up of sponge or soft foam. These are the culprits who mess with your SI joints.
DO NOT.......
YOU CAN REST YOUR FEET WHILE YOU STAND
